Speed Making

Following the Paris and Brussels attacks, Atrium.brussels and its partners launched Make.brussels, a call for participative community projects to lift the spirits of our city and its residents. In a creative approach to revitalising the city, all citizens were invited to enhance one of the 10 city centre districts. A multitalented group of local “makers” were starting to form a network, and the Lab wanted to take advantage of this, helping them to present their ideas. With this in mind, how could we showcase these fledgeling concepts while developing a creative community?

Atrium.lab therefore decided to organise a creative and constructive “speed making” networking event, in order to bring the makers together around converging and complementary ideas. The principle? Makers, business experts, 3 stages of work and reflection. MIX: Discussion of common themes in district and retail development MATCH: Skill matching using a giant “small ads” board, matching the right person to the right project. MAKE: small group session to formulate ideas to upload to the platform.

Using this method, the participants pinpointed their needs, as well as the feasibility of their idea. Finally, they published their ideas alongside other creative projects on the Make.Brussels site. The various exercises created a network for dialogue and consolidated a community of makers. The workshop also revealed a love of Brussels and a boundless imagination. The makers all had the same desire; to make the city centre districts more attractive.

“By inviting people to come together around a project, around an idea, by offering them the time and space to imagine and express themselves, and by giving considered replies to every question, you unleash a rare collective creativity. ”
